Undergoing plastic surgery is a major decision and you must be aware of what the treatment entails. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions people ask before making a final decision.

This depends on the technique being used. In general, excess tissue is removed, the underlying tissues are tightened, the tummy button may be re-sighted and the skin is pulled down to give a tighter appearance.

In some cases, people may have combined procedures to achieve the outcome they desire. The fat removed during a tummy tuck may be transferred to another area such as the breasts or face. This is known as a fat transfer or lipomodelling.

Tummy tuck surgery can take several hours to perform so will require a general anaesthetic. You will be expected to remain in the hospital for the first 1-2 days and the abdominal tissues will feel tight under a compression garment. Abdominal drains may or may not be required and you will be prescribed a course of oral antibiotics and pain killers. During the recovery period, you will be able to undertake light activities however, you will be expected to avoid strenuous activity for up to 12 weeks.

Tummy tuck incisions can take up to 8 weeks to heal but you are unlikely to need dressings after 2-3 weeks. The swellings and bruising subsides over 4-6 weeks and advice will be given by Mr Wokes to maximise the healing process. Like all scars, tummy tuck scars and any contour irregularities can take a 1 year to reach their final appearance.

Tummy tuck surgery plays no part in fertility and will not affect the chances of getting pregnant. However, tummy tuck results may be reversed due to natural changes to the body during pregnancy such as weight gain and skin stretching. These changes are natural and cannot be stopped.

Tummy tuck surgery can a beneficial procedure to help women regain confidence and a closer resemblance to their pre-pregnancy body. However, it is recommended to wait at least 12 months. It is important to ensure you are in the optimal physical condition before proceeding with cosmetic surgery as outcomes will be better. A restriction on strenuous activities for 8-12 weeks should be anticipated.
