Reasons for Breast Enlargement surgery

Each person’s reason for wanting breast enlargement surgery is different. Many women find they want breast enlargement surgery to simply combat the desire for bigger boobs due to naturally small breasts or for confidence issues.

  • Losing weight can cause excess skin or lack of elasticity which can affect the appearance of breasts such as drooping breasts.
  • Ageing is a natural process meaning over time breasts may not be considered as ‘perky’ or full breasts as you get older.
  • Menopause
  • Breasts are asymmetrical
  • Need to replace pre-existing implants
  • Change in shape and appearance after childbirth or breastfeeding
  • Improve self-confidence

Frequently Asked Questions

Undergoing plastic surgery is a major decision and you must be aware of what the treatment entails. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions people ask before making a final decision.

After a consultation with Mr Wokes a plan will be formulated to suit your needs. Discussion will include the incision site (usually under the breast in the infra-mammary fold), the implant placement pocket (under the gland or under the muscle or a combination) and the size, shape and composition of the implant. Trial sizers will be used to determine an estimate of the implant size desired. The potential complications of breast augmentation with implants will be discussed in detail. After a second follow-up consultation to answer any questions and go through the procedure again, the surgery date can be planned.

Breast augmentation surgery usually takes 1-2 hours to perform. In some cases, you may be able to return home the same day however one night stay in hospital could be required. A course of oral antibiotics and painkillers will be prescribed and a support bra will be provided on discharge from hospital.

Choosing the right implant is an important factor that Mr Wokes will discuss with you based on your bespoke requirements and the shape or appearance you are hoping for. The most common type of implant used for breast augmentation in the UK is a silicone gel implant. Silicone breast implants are designed to wrinkle less and give a more natural appearance and feel. All implant options will be discussed with you however, you can find more information here.

Typically, breast implants have a long-term guarantee however, it is best to have them checked every 10 years to ensure there aren’t any issues with the implant itself. In some cases, implants may need to be removed and replaced within 10 years but there is no rule that says implants have to be replaced after a certain amount of time. It is always best to consult with a surgeon if you feel your implant has changed. Mr Wokes is happy to see patient with such concerns.

For most people, breast augmentation surgery should not affect your ability to breastfeed. Whether you decide to have breast augmentation surgery before having children or post children, the ability to breastfeed should not be impaired.

Post breast enlargement surgery, there will be some discomfort and feelings of tenderness and swelling for several weeks. Mr Wokes will provide medication to help with pain and provide detailed post-operative instructions. Swelling is normal after breast augmentation surgery, but it must be monitored as prolonged swelling can damage tissue, causing deformity of the breasts or skin rippling. It is essential to wear a well-fitting, supportive bra throughout recovery as you may experience pain and discomfort during movement.

The garment also allows healing and reduces malposition or migration of the implants. You must wear your support bra day and night for 6 weeks followed by a further 6 weeks at night. You should avoid strenuous activities including heavy upper body exercise and stretching for up to 12 weeks. Mr Wokes will arrange to see you at 1 week, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after surgery.

Depending on what you are looking to gain from breast enlargement, prices will be discussed after consultation to best determine the right steps for what you want such as choosing the right implant, shape, or look you aim to achieve.

As with all surgeries, there is always risk involved such as infection following surgery, bleeding, haematoma formation requiring further surgery, reactions to anaesthesia.

Most of these side effects after breast augmentation can be treated with medication, but more severe complications may require additional surgery to correct them.

You should always check your surgeon is registered and has the right to practice before deciding. You can check your surgeon is registered through the general medical council.
